Physical Interaction

In the physical installation, visitors interact by holding and waving a fan in front of the receiver frame.

So, why waving?

Unlike screen-based or button-controlled interfaces, this interaction is guided by bodily instinct. The act of fanning is universally understood and requires no prior instruction or cultural knowledge. It feels natural to people of all ages and backgrounds. Here, the gesture itself becomes the interface, enabling a direct and physical connection with the artwork.

By choosing fan-waving as the mode of interaction, the installation offers an experience that crosses cultural boundaries. During the exhibition, visitors of all kinds — from young children to older adults, from local residents to international travelers — were able to engage with the work effortlessly and intuitively.

Project Summary

Framing the Seasons is a participatory installation that reanimates classical Song Dynasty fans with contemporary interaction. Each fan holds an NFC tag, becoming a bridge between material artifact and digital imagery. Through tangible gestures, visitors unlock seasonal narratives embedded in tradition.
Project Intention

This work explores how interaction can embody historical aesthetics. Blending algorithmic imagery, embedded electronics, and traditional materials, it investigates how technology can revive ancient rhythms of nature, memory, and cultural flow — quietly sensed, and gently framed.
