Peripheral Product Kits

As extensions of the artwork Framing the Seasons,
these kits invite visitors to physically engage with the visual logic behind the interactive fan paintings.
Each set includes four stamps, a postcard, and a circular-window envelope.
Through the three-step process — Stamp, Frame, View,
users can experience the compositional aesthetics of Song Dynasty fan paintings in a tactile and playful way.

Step 1:  Stamp

Create your personal fan-like scene using four custom rubber stamps, each derived from a specific element within the animated fan paintings.
These motifs — such as blossoming branches or seasonal leaves — were abstracted from Song Dynasty compositions and reinterpreted as modular visual tools.
By stamping them onto a blank postcard, you construct your own imagined natural panorama.

Step 2: Frame

Insert the stamped postcard into a specially designed envelope.
As you adjust its position, the circular cutout naturally transforms the visible portion into a fan-shaped composition.
This marks the first act of framing, as a deliberate choice of perspective and layout.

.
Drag the postcard up or down to frame your fan-shaped composition.

Step 3:  View

Later, use the envelope alone as a portable viewfinder.
Through its circular window, frame real-life scenes around you: a tree, a rooftop, a morning street corner.
This becomes the second act of framing,
where everyday surroundings are gently pulled into the aesthetic world of Song-era flower painting.

Drag the envelope to frame the part of the scene you find beautiful

Project Summary

Framing the Seasons is a participatory installation that reanimates classical Song Dynasty fans with contemporary interaction. Each fan holds an NFC tag, becoming a bridge between material artifact and digital imagery. Through tangible gestures, visitors unlock seasonal narratives embedded in tradition.
Project Intention

This work explores how interaction can embody historical aesthetics. Blending algorithmic imagery, embedded electronics, and traditional materials, it investigates how technology can revive ancient rhythms of nature, memory, and cultural flow — quietly sensed, and gently framed.
