Fabrication Process

Printing the Fan Surface
The seasonal artwork is printed onto the selected fabric.
Frame and Surface Matching
The frame is checked against the printed fan surface to ensure proper alignment and sizing.
Mounting the First Surface Layer
One side of the fan surface is carefully attached to the frame.
Embedding the NFC Tag
The NFC tag is fixed onto a layer of stiff interfacing fabric.
Light-blocking Adjustment
During testing, the tag was found to be faintly visible through the fan surface. To preserve visual integrity, an additional layer of black light-blocking fabric was added to conceal the tag.
Mounting the Second Surface Layer
The second side of the fan surface is aligned and attached, enclosing the inner components.
Attaching the Handle
Finally, the wooden handle is installed, completing the fan.

Project Summary

Framing the Seasons is a participatory installation that reanimates classical Song Dynasty fans with contemporary interaction. Each fan holds an NFC tag, becoming a bridge between material artifact and digital imagery. Through tangible gestures, visitors unlock seasonal narratives embedded in tradition.
Project Intention

This work explores how interaction can embody historical aesthetics. Blending algorithmic imagery, embedded electronics, and traditional materials, it investigates how technology can revive ancient rhythms of nature, memory, and cultural flow — quietly sensed, and gently framed.
